Shipping Analytics: The Metrics Every Online Seller Should Track

FLFelix LandShipwix Marketing Team

Most sellers treat shipping as a cost they react to. The invoice arrives, they wince, they move on. But shipping is one of the most measurable parts of an e-commerce business, and the sellers who measure it find savings and service improvements that reactive sellers never see.

You can't cut what you don't track. Here are the shipping metrics worth watching, and what each one tells you.

Metric 1: Cost per order (and per parcel)

The foundational number. Your true cost per parcel isn't the base rate. It's base rate plus surcharges (residential delivery, dimensional weight, fuel, additional handling). Tracking the all-in cost per order tells you what shipping is really costing you, reveals which orders are quietly unprofitable, and gives you a baseline to improve against. If you only track one metric, track this one.

Metric 2: Average delivery time by carrier and zone

How long parcels actually take, broken down by carrier and destination zone, tells you whether you're meeting customer expectations and which carrier is fastest where. The same carrier can be excellent in one region and mediocre in another. Without the breakdown, you're guessing.

Metric 3: On-time delivery rate

The percentage of parcels that arrive by their promised date. This is a direct measure of the promise you're keeping to customers. A slipping on-time rate predicts rising support tickets and falling repeat purchases before they show up elsewhere. That makes it an early-warning metric worth watching closely.

Metric 4: Carrier performance comparison

When you ship across multiple carriers, comparing them side by side on cost, speed, on-time rate, and damage/loss surfaces the underperformer you'd otherwise keep paying. Maybe one carrier is consistently slower to a key region, or costs more for the parcels you ship most. This comparison turns "I think carrier X is fine" into evidence you can act on.

Metric 5: Damage and loss / re-ship rate

The share of orders that arrive damaged, get lost, or otherwise need re-shipping. Each one costs you twice: the replacement parcel plus the customer-experience hit. A rising re-ship rate can point to a packaging problem, a carrier-handling issue, or both. Tracking it tells you where to intervene.

Metric 6: WISMO volume as a shipping signal

"Where is my order?" support tickets are usually thought of as a support metric, but they're really a shipping health signal. A spike in WISMO inquiries often means deliveries are slow, tracking isn't reaching customers, or estimates are inaccurate. Watching WISMO volume gives you an early read on delivery problems, often before the delivery metrics themselves make the issue obvious.

Metric 7: Shipping cost as a percentage of revenue

Tracking shipping spend as a share of revenue keeps the whole category in perspective as you grow. If that percentage creeps up, it's a signal that rate increases, surcharges, or packaging inefficiencies are outpacing your pricing. That's your prompt to renegotiate, re-pack, or re-shop carriers before it eats your margin.

Turning metrics into action

Metrics are only useful if they change what you do. The pattern:

The biggest win of all is preventing dissatisfaction before customers notice. You spot a delayed shipment in your analytics and reach out proactively, instead of waiting for the complaint.
